Heritage Open Days
Beverley Civic Society runs Heritage Open Days every September, in collaboration with Hull’s programme. Heritage Open Days are the largest cultural festival in England, organised by a HQ in London, and administered nationally by a section of the National Trust. It is a free festival, to celebrate together what marvellous things there are to see and do in England, and of course there are many in Beverley.
Each year HQ chooses one or more national themes, and recently Beverley has welcomed thousands of visitors to the themes of Georgian buildings, Extraordinary Women, and Hidden Nature.
It is only possible to manage this Beverley event with the unstinting help of many people, as property owners, local government, the churches and many others agree to take part, with an army of volunteers from the Civic Society and beyond, to staff the ‘openings’. We are particularly fortunate to have the amazing City of Culture volunteers, in their distinctive uniforms, seen here at St Mary’s Church in 2020.
